Pressure Won't Enter My Head, Affirms Bullish Postecoglou

Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou insists that external scrutiny regarding his role will not impact his approach.

The club is without a victory in his initial half-dozen matches since the coach replaced Nuno Espirito Santo at the City Ground.

A section of Forest supporters chanted, "you're getting sacked in the morning", at the former Tottenham and Celtic manager following the recent 3-2 Europa League defeat at home to the Danish side.

Postecoglou's Response to Pressure

Postecoglou, however, mentioned that the European title he won at Tottenham the previous campaign, prior to being dismissed in the off-season, was evidence he does not allow pressure to affect his management.

"It doesn't enter my head," he continued. "My duty lies in making sure this team progresses and reaches a position where it can challenge for things," stated Postecoglou.

"Should I begin setting deadlines to that or stress over what is going to happen soon then I am not performing the position I have been assigned.

"I believe it is helpful to anyone. At the end of the day, I have to focus on the environment, the practice sessions, the way we play, and as I mentioned recently, I am remain very, very strong in my belief that we are not too far away.

"To explain - I was aware I was being dismissed at Tottenham approximately 3-4 months before I did, but that didn't prevent me from winning something."

Career History

The 60-year-old moved to Spurs from Celtic in 2023 and supporters at first warmed to the coach for his offensive style of play, with the Londoners finishing 5th in the English top flight during his debut campaign.

Postecoglou's second term was challenging as Spurs finished fourth from bottom in the standings. He did, however, lead the team to their initial silverware in 17 years as they defeated Manchester United in the European final.

Current Circumstances

Forest visit Newcastle United on Sunday (14:00 BST).

Amid the unfavorable streak of results, there is little doubt it has been a difficult beginning for Postecoglou.

And the numbers demonstrate just how disappointing Forest have performed since his arrival.

Statistical Analysis

  • In Postecoglou's six matches, they have been beaten on four occasions across three different competitions
  • No Premier League team has been defeated in as many matches as Forest since his appointment
  • They have conceded 13 goals - at a average of 2.17 per game
  • Only Manchester United and Burnley have a poorer defensive per game record than Forest since Postecoglou's appointment
  • Unexpectedly, it is the 35th occurrence in which a top-flight manager has not secured a victory in any of first six fixtures in all competitions

Historical Perspective

Paul Jewell maintains the record, having not won in his first 27 matches as Derby County boss in the 2007-2008 campaign.

Nuno was fired after just three matches of this campaign when Forest were tenth in the standings. They are currently seventeenth, having drawn one and lost two of their three domestic games under Postecoglou.

He is the first permanent Forest manager in a century not to win any of first six matches.

Fan Perspective

This season could have been one of Nottingham Forest's best in recent times. Qualification for Europe for the first time in 30 years, the best squad this millennium and all involved pulling in the common goal.

Unexpectedly, at least for now, that has all gone out of the window. Nuno has departed, performances have been abject and on Thursday night the City Ground criticized the recent appointment Ange Postecoglou after just six games.

And yet it's typically characteristic Forest, a team that shifts from success to self-made disaster like a novice motorist who fails to remain in a traffic line.

Future Challenges

Amid fixtures against Newcastle, the Blues, Porto, the Cherries and Manchester United approaching, it's quite difficult to predict if he can turn it around before it becomes even more negative.

But ask any fan and they'll inform you the same, it's always eventful at Nottingham Forest.
